Considering what a huge success the novel was back in the day and the modern style for adventure games (see Game of Thrones for example), maybe it was just a matter of time. Now, studio Daedalic Entertainment just confirmed the development and planned launch in fall 2017 of a video game based on 1989's The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follet's best-selling novel.

At this early stage there are no trailers or screenshots, but developers confirm the game will hit platforms such as PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac and iOS:

"This is the first official Ken Follett videogame to be developed. It will revolve around the story of Follett's best-selling novel "The Pillars of the Earth". At the same time, Ken Follett is also working on a new novel, which is scheduled to be published in fall 2017, and will be taking readers back to the fictitious medieval town of Kingsbridge in South England."

While both titles will be released simultaneously, it's worth underlining that Follett is working on the third book and not on the video game, while Daedalic is basing their new game on the acclaimed historical novel, which was set, for those who don't know (or haven't watched the recent TV adaptation) "around the building of a cathedral, which traces the development and disputes between clergy, nobility and the simple people, suffering from exploitation". It is, however, a clear two-way marketing strategy. As far as the video game goes this is the only description so far attached with the official announcement:

"Together with Bastei Lübbe and Ken Follett we determined that the genre of adventure games is the best and most suitable way to adapt and express the substantial depth of such a historical novel. Adventure games are interactive literature, and we at Daedalic dedicated ourselves to the perfection of this genre's playing experience. We are very happy and feel extremely honored that our work is being acknowledged by one of the world's best-selling authors, and to be allowed to take his work into interactivity."

Same as with other Daedalic adventures, The Pillars of the Earth will be translated to ten languages and published digitally worldwide, and physically in selected markets.

REVIEW. Written by Bengt Lemne

"There is certainly promise here and the narrative and drama itself are of such high quality that you can overlook that lack of actual consequence to your choices."
