As announced during TennoCon 2017, Digital Extremes is expanding on Warframe with Plains of Eidolon, a new and "vast" open-world area that looks to change things up for the enduringly popular online shooter.

Players will be able to freely explore this new area (complete with day/night cycle), fighting both new and familiar creatures and enemies, and there'll be a new Warframe to earn/unlock too. We're also promised a "gripping" story told via interactive NPCs based in the scavenger city of Cetus, ruled by the Ostrons (who, rather grimly, harvest biomechanical tissue from Orokin Towers).

Steve Sinclair, creative director of Warframe, wrote the following after the announcement: "Plains of Eidolon is our first step in adding a new kind of player freedom to the game. We wanted to give our players something new, something dramatic, and that meant taking risks and evolving the game in a fresh, new direction. For veteran players, we're always trying to give them a living, evolving game."

The Plains of Eidolon expansion is due on PC, PS4 and Xbox One later this year, and you can see it action via the gameplay trailer and screens added below.
