Although The Evil Within is returning later this year with a sequel, original director Shinji Mikami won't be returning in that role, with John Johanas taking the reigns instead. IGN recently spoke to the new director about the game to get an insight into what might change, and it seems there's a mix of classic The Evil Within features, as well as brand new things.

One of the questions asked was regarding whether the disorientation would return, and Johanas said that although shifting realities is "a key part of the franchise and it exists in the game again, however thematically it won't be as jarring as it was in the first game. Even with the disorientation, this time there's a bit more logic to when and how it happens."

Johanas also spoke about the aesthetic, since the first one had that of hospitals throughout. "There wasn't a singular aesthetic that we centred on this time," he explained. "There is an Americana, rural feel to the town of Union, but because of how the characters work in this game, you'll be going to multiple locales that have various aesthetics. Although there was an effort this time to make the environments have a bit heavier psychological horror tinge than the gore-horror of the original."

In terms of gameplay, he also said that, while other games follow the route of having an unbeatable enemy, with run-and-hide style gameplay, that won't be all there is in the sequel. "I think that type of pure horror gameplay is definitely compelling and I tend to enjoy it as well, but it can get a little overbearing if it goes on too long," he said. "Not to give away too much, but just like the original, there are some times where you have to run and hide rather than fight, but for the most part The Evil Within 2 puts you in situations where, if you are prepared correctly, you can take on the enemies."

Does the sequel sound promising to you?

REVIEW. Written by Sam Bishop

"The smoother and deeper gameplay makes up for some shortfalls when it comes to story."
