Gamescom is a big deal. In fact, it is the largest video game convention in the world, and this year a new record was set with over 350,000 visitors over the course of the 5 days (day one was only open to trade and press). While 350,000 visitors is near the same mark set last year (345,000), new records were set in terms of the number of countries visitors came from (106), and there were 919 companies in attendance from 54 countries. A total 30,700 trade visitors were in attendance and this year's show was opened by German chancellor Angela Merkel.

As Gamescom now occupies all the major halls of the Kölnmesse it is difficult to see further growth in years ahead, but improvements can definitely still be made to the flow of crowds and access to games.

Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, organiser of gamescom, had this to say via press release: "We are excited. gamescom 2017 set new standards and a new visitor record. More than ever, it proved its exceptional, worldwide importance as a 360 degree experience event and a leading communications platform for current and future themes of the computer and video games industry. We are very satisfied and are pleased that we were able to offer trade and private visitors the fascination of digital entertainment here in Cologne in this extraordinary form."
