Analysis firm Canalys has taken stock of the previous quarter regarding virtual reality headsets on the market, and according to the company, sales are booming with no less than a million headsets sold between July and September. The breakdown is as follows:
-490,000 PS VR (49%)
-210,000 Oculus Rift (21%)
-160,000 HTC Vive (16%)
-140,000 Other (14%)
Following price cuts this summer for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and with the arrival of bundles finally including the camera for the PlayStation VR, the number of VR adopters seems to be rising (although, it's impossible to gauge how many second-hand headsets are doing the rounds).
The fact that virtual reality can also be implemented beyond gaming could also allow it to grow in the coming months. This, in any case, is the opinion of Canalys analyst Jason Low, who wrote:
"VR in business can be applied to many industries, such as manufacturing, healthcare and education. As top-tier PC vendors, including HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and Dell, launch their own VR headsets, using their distribution channel efficiencies, one can expect a strong VR uptake in business."
The results of the next quarter will be particularly interesting with regards to VR in gaming, especially with Christmas in sight, which is always a strong period for the industry.
Do you have a VR headset at home? If not, are you considering buying one?
